Fiber to Fiber Converters Connection Guide

One of the easiest ways to converter copper to fiber is using fiber media converter which is a simple device that are widely used in today’s network. Fiber media converters are usually used in pairs to achieve the conversion between two different types of media, or used to extend network. However, the function of fiber media converter is not limited to converter media types between fiber optic and copper. They are also able to converter media types between different fiber optic: single-mode and multimode, dual fiber and single fiber, wavelength conversion. The goal of this post is to introduce fiber to fiber converter.
Why Is Fiber to Fiber Converter Needed?
It is obvious that copper to fiber converters promote and bring down the price for deployment of FTTH. But what can fiber to fiber converters do? The above mentioned functions cannot fully explain the significant role that fiber to fiber media converters play in fiber optic network. Only in practical fiber optic cabling can the magic power of these simple devices be totally exhibited. Thus, in the following part of this tutorial, several application examples of fiber to fiber converters will be provided to further illustrate how useful and important fiber to fiber converters are.

Connect Fiber to Fiber Converters to the Network
In general, fiber to fiber converters is capable to do the conversion of fiber optic from the fiber mode, fiber count and wavelength. Starting from these basic functions, a variety of applications can be explored.
Conversion Between Multimode and Single-mode
In network, it is inevitable to transmit signals from two points that are far away from each other. Thus, single-mode fiber optic cables are usually used for long distance transmission. In many data centers or enterprise networks, there are many equipment using multimode ports, what’s more, the fiber optic cables from the service providers are usually single-mode. Here is also another common situation. In many campuses, the devices inside a building are usually multimode, while single-mode fiber is used between the buildings. Thus, the conversion of the fiber optic cable between single-mode and multimode is necessary. With single-mode to multimode converters, the network is extended effectively eliminating the worries about the mode type of the devices. The following picture is a simple solution to these problems.

Conversion Between Dual Fiber to Single Fiber
Most of the optical devices in our network using dual fibers for transmission. One fiber is designated for receiving and the other for transmitting. While there are some devices using single fiber for both transmitting and receiving, which is known as BIDI. This depends on the wavelength division multiplexing technology. Two different wavelengths, usually 1310 nm and 1550 nm, are used for receiving and transmitting separately in this kind of transmission system. For this kind of situation, conversion between dual fibers and single fiber can be done by fiber to fiber converters. The following picture shows two dual fiber switch that are connected with single fiber by using a pair of fiber to fiber converters.

Fiber to fiber converter can also double the fiber capacity by conversion between dual fiber to single fiber. In many cases, the number of end users and devices increases as the days go. Thus, more switches and fiber optic cables are used to satisfy the need of end users and devices. While the backbone fiber optic cable is not increased. By converting each strand of dual fiber to a BiDi single-fiber link (as shown in the following picture), the fiber capacity is double simply.

Conversion Between Wavelengths
To further increase the fiber capacity, the conversion between wavelengths is suggested by using fiber to fiber converters. For applications that using WDM technologies, converting the different wavelengths of various signals and multiplex them on a single fiber optic cable can largely increase the fiber capacity. The following picture shows such applications can illustrate this point very well. Several signals of different wavelengths are multiplexed on a CWDM fiber link from on side of the network and demultiplexed on the other side. Then several fiber to fiber converters changed their wavelengths to support the target devices.

Conclusion
Fiber to fiber converter is a cost-effective solution to extend the network and increase fiber capacity by converting the fiber mode, fiber count and fiber wavelengths. There are a variety of fiber media converters provided in FS.COM, including fiber to fiber converter, copper to fiber converter and SDI&HDMI&VGA fiber converter.
